Eden garden is one of the recognised cricket ground in the world. It the largest cricket stadium in india and second largest cricket stadium in world in terms of seating capacity. It is the historic and iconic stadium which has a seating capacity of more than one lakhs spectator. The eden garden cricket stadium has hosted all the major events of cricket including world cup, twenty20, asia cup and many others. It has also hosted world cup finals 1987. This cricket ground is established in 1864 and is homeground bengal cricket team and IPL franchise team, kolkata knight riders. It is also a venue of test, ODIs and T20 matches of the indian national cricket team.
Before 1987 world cup, eden garden stadium had a seating capacity of 40000 which was later increased to 96000. However in many occasion, more than 100000 spectators has been recorded. Before the world cup 2011, eden garden stadium went under renovation. Then upgrade also reduce the seating capacity from 120000 to 90000. In 2017, india has hosted the highest number of international matches in india - 82 which include 40 test matches, 31 ODIs, 6 T20, 4 women ODIs, and one women T20. now it the third biggest cricket stadium in the world , trailing melbourne cricket ground and ANZ stadium in Australia.

It is located in the heart of kolkata near maidan. The eden garden complex is spread over lush green 50 acres of land including the cricket stadium, indoor stadium and gardens. These gardens are situated beside the nearby hooghly river, which add another local attraction to the place. Short cruises by boats and steamers are available down the hooghly river with the vidyasagar setu etched in background giving you a beautiful view of the place. Netaji indoor stadium, another local attraction is also a part of eden garden complex. Entering the garden is free of cost but entering the cricket stadium is restricted by tickets and is only allowed to visit during the matches. It is not only popular for sports but also for concerts and exhibition.
This stadium first held its test match in 1934 between england and india and its first one day international at 1987 between india and pakistan. It was the first cricket ground ever, where flood lights were installed and both day and night cricket were played. The headquarter of the cricket association in bengal is situated at the eden garden. Eden garden is renowned for it large cheerful crowds. Eden garden has hosted six cricket world cup matches. Due to eden iconic status, eden has hosted four finals and one semifinals. Along with the MCG, the Eden garden remain cricket answer to coliseum.
